As part of a graduate urban planning studio, I led a comprehensive housing strategy for migrants in Newark, NJ—America’s third-oldest city and its most immigrant-dense municipality. Our client, the City Planning Director, tasked us with creating a replicable model of dignified migrant housing that supports long-term integration. Centered around Newark360’s guiding principles of health, equity, and resilience, our proposal focused on two city-owned sites suitable for development and explored zoning reform, environmental resilience, and inclusive design. We engaged local stakeholders, analyzed GIS data, and proposed a multi-stakeholder development model involving community-based organizations to provide wraparound services. The final plan integrated architectural, social, and policy solutions to expand equitable housing access for Newark’s most vulnerable newcomers.
